Abstract

en

Polymerization of vinyl monomers, particularly of acrylonitrile, was studied in the presence of copper(II)chloride, oligo(n)ethylene-(n+1)amines as multidentate ligands, and carbon tetrachloride. The equimolar copper(II)-oligo(n)ethylene-(n+1)amine system could not initiate the polymerization of vinyl monomers. In the presence of excess amount of oligo(n)ethylene-(n+1)amine, however, the polymerization was much accelerated. These facts suggest that the initiation process involved a reaction between copper(II)-oligo(n)ethylene-(n+1)amine complex with free oligo(n)ethylene-(n+1)amine present in the reaction system.
