Abstract

The condensation of 2-chloro-5-nitropyridine with a number of sulfonamides is described. Sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfathiazole, sulfapyridine, sulfisoxazole, sulfamethoxypyridazine, and sulfadimethoxine afforded the N4 derivatives via the application of Banks' procedure. 4-Homosulfanilamide using Ullmann's and Mangini's conditions, yielded the N1 and N4 derivatives, respectively. With benzylsulfonamide and benzenesulfonamide adopting Ullmann's method the corresponding N-substituted derivatives were obtained.
