Abstract

The original article to which this Erratum refers was published in International Journal of Cancer (2002) 102(1) 29–33

Maskarinec G, Nagata C, Shimizu H, Kashiki Y. A comparison of mammographic densities and their determinants in women from Japan and Hawaii. Int. J. Cancer 102, 29–33 (2002).

In the above referenced article, an error occurred when the authors transformed the number of pixels into cm2. Because they were not aware that the software for the Cobrascan CX612T X-ray digitizer applies a linear scaling factor of 1.27 (equivalent to 1.6129 when calculating the size of an area) during scanning, they underestimated the breast sizes and the dense areas in the study population. To allow valid comparisons with other studies, the corrected values are presented here (Bold numbers in Table II).

Table II. (Corrected)—Mammographic Measures by Ethnicity and Place of Residence
Characteristic Japanese in Gifu Japanese in Hawaii Caucasians in Hawaii p-value
Breast size (cm2) Mean 89.83 90.98 141.57 <0.0001
(std) (33.65) (39.98) (70.90)
Adjusted mean 88.16 85.91 115.20 <0.0001
Dense area (cm2) Mean 26.91 30.90 33.62 0.105
(std) (14.65) (18.04) (25.42)
Adjusted mean 23.86 28.47 30.06 0.003
Percent density Mean 31.3 36.4 28.3 0.0001
(std) (14.4) (15.9) (20.3)
Adjusted mean 29.4 35.7 31.3 <0.0001
  • 1 Logarithmic (area) and square root (dense) transformation was used for significance testing because of non-normal distribution.
  • 2 Adjusted for age, menopausal status, number of children, body mass index, and history of ovariectomy.
