3-Alkyl-3-phenylpyrazines (V) can be prepared in high yield and excellent stereoselectivity by alkylation of chiral 3-phenylpyrazines (III). Mild hydrolysis liberates the corresponding chiral α-alkyl-α-phenylglycine methyl esters (VI) without racemization.
