ChemInform Abstract

The title compound is obtained by hydrolyzing a HNO3 solution of Bi(NO3)3 and Na3VO4 with Na2CO3 or NaHCO3 at room temperature. The samples are characterized by XRD and SEM. Tetragonal BiVO4 is obtained after 4.5 h hydrolysis time while the monoclinic form is obtained after 46 h. The photocatalytic activity of tetragonal BiVO4 for O2 evolution from an aqueous AgNO3 solution under visible light irradiation is negligible, whereas the monoclinic form shows high photocatalytic activity which is attributed to the distortion of a Bi—O polyhedron by a 6s2 lone pair of Bi3+.
