ChemInform Abstract

By treatment with a strong base, 2-O-triflylglycopyranosides tested give 2-C-methyl derivatives, mainly through α-elimination. The 4-O-triflyl analogues give mainly the corresponding unsaturated compounds or detriflylated alcohols. Treatment of the title pyranosides with a moderately strong base affords mainly the corresponding unsaturated derivatives through β-elimination or detriflylated alcohols. Finally, treatment with a weak base furnishes the corresponding inverted pyridinium salts, e.g. (XI) and (XVI), in high yields with exception of mannopyranoside (I).
