Treatment of ethyl vinyl ether with trifluoroacetic anhydride in the presence of catalytic DMAP generates a solution of 4-ethoxy-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-ene-2-one (III). It reacts with α-amino acids, to give the corresponding 4-amino-1,1,1-trifluorobut-3-ene-2-ones. Subsequent cyclization yields the title compounds.
