ChemInform Abstract
Friedel—Crafts sulfonylation of arenes with sulfonic acids, sulfonic anhydrides, and sulfonyl chlorides is accomplished by a mild and efficient method using Fe3+-montmorillonite K10 as reusable catalyst. Various metal-exchanged K 10 montmorillonites and synthetic zeolites are screened and besides Fe3+-montmorillonite K10 in the family of clays, beta-zeolite in the family of zeolites exhibits the highest activity. The optimal conditions and sulfonylating partners for regioselective sulfonylation of toluene and naphthalene are examined.
