An efficient clay-catalyzed route for the synthesis of the title propionate (III) and its conversion into quinolinecarboxylic acids (VI) (5 examples), a very important class of antibacterial compounds, is described. This method can be easily extended to other important antibacterial quinolonecarboxylic acids.
