ChemInform Abstract

Six- and seven-membered lactones are formed by the rhodium-catalyzed rearrangement of cyclobutanones substituted at the 3- or 2-position with an ortho-hydroxyphenyl group, respectively. The presence of CO in the reaction of cyclobutanones (VI) prevents the formation of undesired products.
