ChemInform Abstract

Irradiation of cyclopropenyltrisilane (I) in methylcyclohexane at 254 nm provides the title trimethylsilyl-silacyclobutenyl radical by cleavage of only one Si—Si bond. This radical is characterized by ESR measurements as well as by quenching with ethanethiol to provide silacyclobutene (II). The expected tetra-tert-butylsilatetrahedrane (III) or its isomer silacyclobutadiene (IV) are not observed in the reaction mixture.
