ChemInform Abstract

The title compound is prepared by reacting pressed pellets of stoichiometric mixtures of Sc2O3, amorphous boron, and graphite at 1700 °C (vacuum, 10 h; boron nitride crucible). Sc3B0.75C3 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/mmm with Z = 1 (powder XRD). The structure contains isolated C atoms, chains of [Sc10] polyhedra parallel to the c-axis, and linear C—B—C chains with a short B—C bond length of 1.47 Å. The presence of a B vacancy and site disorder in the C—B—C chain-end sites is suggested.
