ChemInform Abstract

The configuration inversion ability at C-4 of pentose terminal aldehydes (I), (V), and (IX) in the presence of a strong base is investigated. The aldehydes are treated with LDA and the mixtures obtained are reduced in situ. Deacetonation is observed followed by aldol reactions between the aldehydes and acetone. The results do not confirm the facile inversion of configuration at the α-position.
