ChemInform Abstract

The new ternary compounds NaB5C and KB5C are prepared by reaction of sodium or potassium with boron and graphite in a molar ratio of 6:5:1 at 1050 °C for NaB5C (2 h) and at 1100 °C for KB5C (16 h). Both compounds crystallize in the cubic space group Pmequation imagem with Z = 1. The compounds consist of an anionic B/C octahedral framework. Carbon atoms are statistically distributed over the boron sites. The new phases are isotypic with known cubic hexaborides, e.g. CaB6. KB5C is diamagnetic and exhibits semiconducting behavior.
