ChemInform Abstract

Single crystals of the title compounds are grown by reaction of CdO and Ln2O3 (Ln: La, Sm, Eu) in a B2O3 flux (1073 K, 2 d, closed Ag-tube). The compounds, which are isotypic with CoSm[B5O10], crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/n with Z = 4. The structure contains planes formed by the B5O5-10 anions. Three of the five boron sites are tetrahedrally, the other two trigonally coordinated. The polyborate anions are connected via Cd2O10 units to form a three-dimensional framework with tunnels occupied by Ln3+ in tenfold coordination.
