ChemInform Abstract

The title reaction proceeds efficiently with or without 0.2% acid catalyst. An increasing amount of H2SO4 leads to partial dealkylation of hexaalkoxytriphenylenes, cf. product (III). MoCl5 is also useful for the coupling of biphenyls with alkoxyphenol leading to monofunctionalized triphenylenes, e.g. (III), which are important precursors for the synthesis of discotic oligomers and polymers.
