ChemInform Abstract

A convenient and high-yielding one-pot preparation of the title compound (II) via Fe-catalyzed oxidation of 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenol (I) is reported. A plausible mechanism which involves formation of intermediate (III) and subsequent acid-promoted 1,2-migration and loss of the t-butyl group is proposed.
