The advantages of the optimized aqueous/organic biphasic synthesis of ibuprofen (III), using water-soluble Pd catalyst in the presence of TosOH, are facile catalyst separation, relatively mild non-corrosive reaction conditions, and avoidance of organic solvents, which has environmental benefits. However, the activity of this catalyst is diminished compared to the conventional Pd/PPh3 catalyst system, and further investigations are necessary to overcome this problem.
