ChemInform Abstract

Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility in the temp.-range 2 to 300 K of single crystals of SmCl2, prepared by chemical vapor transport from a mixture of SmCl3 and AlCl3, show a magnetic behavior characteristic for Sm(II). The data are interpreted theoretically using a recently developed model which describes the influence of the crystal field according to the angular overlap model for f-electrons.
