The type two intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of the triene (I) followed by a bridged to fused ring interchange sequence provides an efficient stereoselective route to fused 5,7-ring systems, e.g. (VIII). Compound (VIII) is a useful precursor of the antifungal sesquiterpene (.+-.)-ledol (IX).
