Reduction of the two tricyclic ketones (I) and (III) affords the racemic alcohols (II) and (IV), respectively. Optical resolution of each alcohol using (+)-di-p-toluoyl-D-tartaric acid leads to the corresponding optically active metabolites in 100% e.e.
