1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition of nitrilimines (II) to the exocyclic double bond of methylenepyrrolidinones such as (I) gives spiropyrazolines ( III) as the single products. Cycloaddition of N-phenylnitrone (IVb) to (I) proceeds with complete regio- and diastereoselectivity furnishing the isoxazolidine (Vb) exclusively. However, attempted cycloaddition of N-methylnitrone (IVa) to (I) fails even under more severe conditions.
