ChemInform Abstract

The synthesis of the 1β-fluorocarbapenem derivative (X) starting from the commercially available azetidinone (I) via carbapenem skeleton formation from oxalimide (VII) is given. Attempts to deblock the p-nitrobenzyl ester in (X) fail and result only in the formation of pyrrole derivative (XI) under a variety of conditions.
