Resolution of the penultimate precursor (.+-.)-(XIV) followed by deprotection provides natural fredericamycin A (R)-(XV) and ent- fredericamycin A of indistinguishable in vitro L1210 cytotoxic activity of IC50 0.03 and 0.04 μg/ml, respectively.
