Treatment of 2-amino-1,3-propanediol (I) with diphenylphosphinic chloride and subsequent basic treatment provides a one-pot procedure for the preparation of the title aziridine (III). It reacts with copper-modified Grignard reagents to yield monoreaction products (V) which are capable of adding a second equivalent of a Grignard compound (VII) to give the ring-opened products (VIII).
