The title reagent (II) adds to the sugar aldehyde (I) highly stereoselectively to give the syn-adduct (III). The oxidative desilylation of (III) is achieved under milder conditions than with known analogues of (II), thus enlarging the general applicability of the silicon-based hydroxymethylation procedures.
