The synthesis of the title compounds (IX) and (XII) is achieved via coupling of the mixed anhydrides of the acids (VII) and (X) with the amine (VI). Interestingly, condensation of the phthaloyl protected alaninol (I) with amino acid esters leads to considerable amounts of oxazoloisoindoles as by-products.
