ChemInform Abstract

Molybdenum K-edge EXAFS studies of the layered Mo(IV)-containing molybdates Li2MoO3, Li4Mo3O8 and H2MoO3 give for the first time structural evidence for the presence of Mo-Mo bonded triangles with d( Mo-Mo) ≈2.5 Å. Due to the disordering of triangles in the Li(Mo2/3Li1/3)O2 layers of Li2MoO3 this information cannot be obtained by Bragg diffraction experiments. In Mo(III)-containing LiMoO2 Mo-Mo bonded zigzag chains are formed. A possible model containing disordered Mo chains in the (MoO2) layers in LiMoO2 is discussed.
