ChemInform Abstract

The novel compounds Ln2Pd2In (Ln: La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu) and Th2Pd2In are prepared by reaction of the elements in an argon-arc furnace. They crystallize in the tetragonal space group P4/mbm of the Mo2FeB2 structure type, an ordered derivative of the U3Si2 structure. As shown by susceptibility measurements of bulk samples in the temp. range 2 to 300 K, most of the compounds undergo antiferromagnetic ordering between 4 and 31 K with the exception of ferromagnetic Ce2Pd2In. In the Ln2Pd2In phases, which exhibit three-dimensional magnetic coupling, the magnetic Ln layers are separated by nonmagnetic Pd2In layers.
