ChemInform Abstract

Light brown transparent needles of the title compound are obtained as by-product in the preparation of Tl-based high-Tc superconductors from a mixture of Tl2O3, BaO2 and Ca1.85Sr0.15CuO2 at 920 °C. The compound, characterized by EDAX and single crystal XRD, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbam with Z = 4 of a structure type related to CaFe2O4. Sr0.2Ca2.8Tl2O6 is isostructural with Ca3In2O6 and SrCa2In2O6. It is built-up from linear groups of four edge-sharing strongly distorted TlO6 octahedra which are connected via corners to form two independent zigzag chains. Each TlO6 octahedron also shares edges with the oxygen octahedra surrounding the Ca atoms. In the resulting network, tunnels of bicapped prisms centered by Ca and Sr form.
