The new reaction allows transformation of alkyl phenyl sulfones into alkyl-lithium reagents which immediately react with electrophiles to give the products shown. Only in the case of the vinylic sulfones (IX), (XI), a preferred sulfone-phenyl bond cleavage is observed.
