ChemInform Abstract

A series of 8 geminal aromatic diacetates such as (I) are treated under extremely mild conditions with potassium phenoxides (phenoxide, 4-fluoro phenoxide, 3-dimethylamino phenoxide) to produce the corresponding benzaldehydes (II) with the same efficiency. The advantage of the 3-dimethylamino derivative is that the by-product, i. e. 3-dimethylaminophenyl acetate, can be easily removed by aqueous acidic work-up.
