Meerwein′s simple method for the conversion of lactones into ortholactones by sequential reaction with Et3O+BF- 4 and EtONa is successfully applied for the first time to protected 2-deoxy-aldono-1, 5-lactones (cf. (I), 2 examples). Acid-catalyzed transorthoesterification of the ortholactones obtained with simple diols affords spiro ortholactones in good yields.
