ChemInform Abstract

A new SmCl3-catalyzed electrosynthesis of γ-lactones such as ( III) is described consisting in direct reductive coupling of the carbonyl compounds (I) with the 3-chloro ester (II). For the first time, 3-chloro esters are used as the starting materials instead of the more reactive bromo or iodo esters.
