ChemInform Abstract

The catalytic ring-opening polymerization of cycloheptene (I) proceeds through the rearrangement of (III). By low-temp. 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopic characterization the formation of (III) by addition of ( I) to the carbene complex (II) is confirmed. If the temperature is raised above 255 K the catalytic polymerization of (I) begins, indicating that (III) can be considered as a true initial intermediate in the catalytic system.
