ChemInform Abstract

Reaction of 4-nitrochlorobenzene (I) with ethanol (II) in the presence of polyethylene glycol 400 or polyethylene glycol 1500 as the phase- transfer catalyst produces the corresponding nitrophenetol (III). The yield is excellent when microwave irradiation is used simultaneously. The analogous conversion is performed with 2-nitrochlorobenzene.
