Thermolysis of the bridged phosphonate (I) yields ethyl metaphosphate ( II) as an intermediate which reacts with the epoxides (III) to form the dioxaphospholane 2-oxides (IV). Thermolysis of the phosphonamidate (V) or the phosphonothioate (VII) in the presence of methyloxirane ( IIIa) produces analogously the dioxaphospholane 2-oxide (VI) or the oxathiaphospholane 2-oxides (VIII) and (IX).
