ChemInform Abstract

A dramatic loss of long-range order of MoO3 when physical mixtures of MoO3 and γ-Al2O3 are thermally treated at 720 K, as indicated particularly by a decrease in Mo-Mo coordination numbers, can be interpreted as a spreading of the MoO3 over the surface of γ- Al2O3. This loss of order is more pronounced in the presence of water vapor. A change in the Mo-X distance, observed after thermal treatment, is attributed to Mo-Al in a Mo-O-Al configuration. These structural informations from EXAFS are consistent with conclusions drawn earlier from ion scattering spectroscopy and from Raman spectra.
