ChemInform Abstract

In-situ XANES spectroscopic investigations in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution at 0.05 V (SCE) at the Cu K edge and the Pt LIII edge can be interpreted in terms of the presence of Cu+. The coordination of the adsorbed Cu species is tetrahedral. A characteristic change of the XANES features for Pt with adsorption of Cu represents a change in the electronic properties of the Pt consistent with a partial filling of empty d states. This finding shows that UPD species can modify the electronic structure of a Pt catalyst.
