Reaction of the diarylhydroxy(hydroxylamino)propenes (I) with benzaldehyde (II) does not lead to the formation of nitrones, but gives the adducts (III) instead which undergo base-induced degradation and ring closure, yielding the 3,5-diarylisoxazoles (IV). (Mechanism).
