ChemInform Abstract
The photochromism of spiropyrans (I) is studied by transient absorption and luminescence spectroscopy. Stable, solid photochromic gels are prepared by dissolving 2 mg of (I) in anhydrous iPrOH and adding (Bu-O)2Al-O-Si(O-Et)3 (called ASE), then iPrOH/H2O (2:1); after that the sol is allowed to gel and polymerize for 3-6 days, thus forming inorganic clusters. The photochromic behavior of (I) is found to be different from that in silicate glasses.
