ChemInform Abstract

Binary metal surfaces are generated by codeposition of Pd with other noble metals, viz. Rh, Ru, Ir, and Au on carbon substrates and their electrocatalytic activities for anodic oxidation of MeOH in alkaline medium at 25 °C are evaluated. On addition of the second noble metal the catalytic activity of the C/Pd electrode is drastically enhanced by 30 to 500 times. The extent of enhancement passes through a maximum at a characteristic composition ϑM max and follows the order Rh > Ru > Au > Ir. The activities appear to arise from the geometric as well as electronic properties of the binary combines.
