Abstract
The key reaction described in this paper is the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of the furfuryl 2-(phenylsulfonyl)acrylates (V), yielding the oxanorbornene-fused γ-lactones (VI) and (VII).

The key reaction described in this paper is the intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of the furfuryl 2-(phenylsulfonyl)acrylates (V), yielding the oxanorbornene-fused γ-lactones (VI) and (VII). Some subsequent conversions are described which do not lead to the desired fused cyclohexene derivatives.
