ChemInform Abstract

The aldehydes (Va) and (VIa), prepared from the alkoxytoluenes (Ia) or (Ib), are acylated to yield the compounds (Vb) - (Vd) and (VIb) -(VId). (Vc), (Vd), (VIc), and (VId) react with sulfur dioxide (VII) under irradiation to yield the bicyclic hydroxy sulfones (VIII) and (XI) which are further modified to form the ether (X) or the acetate (XIII). The acyl compounds (VIb) - (VId) are coupled with dimethyl fumarate (XIV) to give the tetroles (XV). Dehydration produces the dihydronaphthalenes (XVI).
