Abstract

Sulfurization of the isothiazolone (I) with phosphorus pentasulfide gives the isothiazolethione (II) which rearranges on methylation with trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate (III), forming the thiazole (IV).

Sulfurization of the isothiazolone (I) with phosphorus pentasulfide gives the isothiazolethione (II) which rearranges on methylation with trimethyloxonium tetrafluoroborate (III), forming the thiazole (IV). This is oxidized to give the sulfone (V).
