Abstract
The β-aroylacrylic acids (I) react with the cyclic amines (II), yielding the γ-keto-α-amino acids (III).

The β-aroylacrylic acids (I) react with the cyclic amines (II), yielding the γ-keto-α-amino acids (III). These are treated with phenyllithium (IV). The intermediate γ-hydroxy amino acids undergo acid-induced ring closure, forming the hydrochlorides (V) of the corresponding lactones.
