Abstract
The benzoic acid esters (I) are treated with freshly prepared potassium graphite (II) to form the phenanthrenequinones (III).

The benzoic acid esters (I) are treated with freshly prepared potassium graphite (II) to form the phenanthrenequinones (III). The diester (IV) gives the products (IIIa) and (V) - (VII) under the same reaction conditions.
