Abstract
The pyrrolidine-2,4-dione (I), prepared from L-valine, is deprotonated with butyllithium to form the trilithio derivative (II).

The pyrrolidine-2,4-dione (I), prepared from L-valine, is deprotonated with butyllithium to form the trilithio derivative (II). This reacts with the aldehydes (III), yielding the unsaturated tetramic acids (V).
