ChemInform Abstract
A convenient route to (III) is developed by iodine oxidation of Mo(0)-carbonyl (I) and Mo(II)-carbonyl complexes (IV) in THF (II) as solvent. The octahedral, meridional configuration of (III) is established by an X-ray analysis (space group Pbcn, Z=4). The interaction of (III) with phosphines (V) to afford the products (VI) represents the first synthetic route to octahedral MoI3 derivatives. Direct reaction between Mo(III) halides and the phosphines are studied. Reduction competes with coordinative addition to produce mixtures of (VII) and (VIIIa) for X: -Cl, -I and R: -Me and mixtures of (VIIIb) and (IX) for X: -I and R: -Et. A possible mechanism for these reactions is discussed.
