Abstract

The dione (III) is obtained in 60% overall yield from (I), partly by way of the by-product (IV).

The dione (III) is obtained in 60% overall yield from (I), partly by way of the by-product (IV). Silylation of (III) or alkylation of the sulfur analogue (V) yields diazapentalenes such as (VII). Depending upon the reaction temperature, treatment of (VII) with (IX) gives either (VIII) or (X). Ring opening also occurs in the formation of (XIIIb) from (III) (some yields not given).
